Canadian Dream is Still Alive Ahead of Student Direct Stream Discontinuation

SDS Discontinuation on International Students

Compare fast food with those prepared by our grandmothers. There is a big difference in the nutritional value of the two, with the former being inferior and the latter not. Anything in this world that is prepared or assembled at a faster pace than normal, compromises quality. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was rolled out by Canada in 2018 and had a similar functioning. This hot favourite immigration programme to apply for a study visa has receded into history books, leaving thousands across the globe wondering why.

When Canada decided to grant a study visa in as little as 20 days rather than a minimum eight-week period, something got to be overlooked. Saying it in the least words, it was the quality of students who were being granted study visas that was overlooked. Student quality meant that it was a one-size-fits-all kind of situation. A student from a science background was pursuing a degree in arts or one where it was possible to get admission. There was little attention given to why a student is pursuing a degree and what the student wants to do after graduation.

A Recipe for the Current Housing Shortage

We would say that Canada’s current crises of housing shortage and rising inflation are due to the quick-fix solution it adopted. The current crisis is also hurting prospective students as they will have to pay increased prices for all the commodities. It cannot be said that the SDS programme malfunctioned, for it served both the parties, Canada and aspiring international students, equally well. However, what they fixed was the quantity rather than the quality.

Faced with the problem of an ageing population and fewer working hands to keep the economy moving, the SDS programmes infused young energetic blood into the system. International students, thousands of them, received promising high-quality living in return. It was the need of the hour back then, but circumstances have changed now.

The launch of the SDS turned out to be a golden ticket for many designated learning institutions (DLI) that offer vocational training. A higher chance of visa approval as fewer documents were required compared to non-SDS enabled DLIs to garner international students to their maximum capacity. Most of these DLIs offer certificate programmes which are of little value in the long run, leaving students to take up odd jobs.

It is not just the infrastructure crises that pushed Canada for a change. The biggest change is due to the technology. Now, Canada or any other developed country does not need generic workers who are willing to work anywhere, but specialised workforce who are masters in a particular field. All the immigration programmes, including for permanent residency and student visas are diverted to fulfil this aim.

Reasons for Removing Student Direct Stream

The recent update from Canada on the discontinuation of the SDS marks a significant shift towards a more unified approach in processing study permits for international students. This change signals Canada’s commitment to ensure all international applicants have equal access to the study permit application process. Only 14 countries were included in the SDS, leaving students from other countries at a disadvantage.

Since 2018, the SDS provided streamlined pathways benefitting them from faster processing time. Even though this application process was beneficial to many students, it created varied standards in the application process based on country of residence. From now on, there will only be a single study visa application programme that will serve the entire world. Canada aims to address student vulnerabilities, strengthen programme integrity, and give all students equal and fair access to the application process.
